 Nonwovens are... well, not woven, but fall into the
(technical) textiles category. Like wovens, nonwovens are basically made from fibers, though not via yarn as an intermediate step.
There are different ways to get from fibers to a finished product. Using pre-fabricated fibers with a certain cut length and then positioning
them in a desired two or three dimensional structure is one. Dry laid nonwovens are made by mechanical means,
so called carding. For wetlay processing the fibers are diluted in water and then deposited on a moving wire screen,
similar to paper manufacturing. Other technologies like spunbond or meltblown go direct from extruding polymer filaments to
textiles in one process. Subsequent to the above described web formation processes the fibers need to be bonded to get
a handable product. This can be done by chemical binders, thermal bonding, or mechanical such as needle punching or water entanglement.

Nonwovens can be tailored to meet specific requirements by selecting the right manufacturing method, fiber polymer, blend and size, bonding technology or post treatment. They are characterized by properties like strength, stiffness, air or water permeability, pore size, chemical and thermal resistance, compatibility with radiation (UV or Gamma), and many more. Additionally, there are antimicrobial, electrostatic, hydrophobic or hydrophilic treatments, to name a few. This variety of performance profiles, between woven fabrics and papers - and beyond - makes these media very interesting for filtration applications. Nonwovens can be converted by many means and be a vital part of a filtration system. Pleated cartridges or panels, slit rolls for coolant filters, bags for liquids or air, pockets, pads, wound elements,... The applications range from drinking water to engine oil, from hospital air cleaners to hot gas filtration, from donor blood to jet fuel. Technology trends are nano fiber nonwovens with enhanced filtration efficiency or "green" products, made with recycled polymers like PET bottle chips, or bio-degradable media.
