 Filter Media for Air/Gas and Liquids

|
Filters (for "filtration"... not for photographic or e-mail spam applications) in general terms have the purpose to change
the concentration or amount of some components in a liquid or gaseous stream, for example to remove the dust and debris
from the air drawn into a lawn mower motor. There usually is a distinct opening where the fluid comes in and an
area where it is leaving the device. Between those two somewhere is a media that is responsible for the separation.
It is permeable for the air or liquid, but does trap contamination.
Thus, filter media play a vital roll in the entire filtration system. Depending on requirements like permeability, pore size, thermal and mechanical stability, cleanability, food compatibility, or cost, specific media are chosen. The convertability of a media is not less important. Some need to be pleated, welded, dye cut, or injection molded to be integrated into the filter. A variety of products is used as filter media: papers, metal wire mesh, sintered metals or plastics, membranes, needle felts, nonwovens, woven fabrics, glass fibers, diatomaceous earth...
